Tip of the Month: February

Not a Case of Paper or Plastic

The biggest problem with plastic bags is that they do not readily break down in the environment and it is estimated that the time it takes them to decompose ranges from 20 to 1000 years. According to Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research agency, some 100 billion bags end up in American landfills each year. Although paper bags maybe more biodegradable and recyclable, manufacturing and recycling them requires more energy than their plastic cousins. A study for the American Forest and Paper Association estimated that about seven billion paper bags were used in the United States in 2003.
